What You Need to Know About Popular Software - Data Mining Software

Simply put, data mining is the process of extracting hidden patterns from the organization's database. Over the years it has become a more and more important tool for adding value to the company's databases. Applications include business, medicine, science and engineering, and combating terrorism. This technique actually involves two very different processes, knowledge discovery and prediction. Knowledge discovery provides users with explicit information that in a sense is sitting in the database but has not been exposed. Prediction is an attempt to read into the future.

Data mining relies on the use of real-world data. To understand how this technology works we need first to review some basic concepts. Data are any facts whether numeric or textual that can be processed by a computer. The categories include operational, non-operational, and metadata. Operational or transactional elements include accounting, cost, inventory, and sales facts and figures. Non-operational elements include forecasts and information describing competitors and the industry as a whole. Metadata describes the data itself; it is required to set up and run the databases.

Data mining commonly performs four interrelated tasks: association rule learning, classification, clustering, and regression. Let's examine each in turn. Association rule learning, also known as market basket analysis, searches for relationships between variables. A classic example is a supermarket determining which products customers buy together. Customers who buy onions and potatoes often buy beef. Classification arranges data into predefined groups. This technology can do so in a sophisticated manner. In a related technique known as clustering the groups are not predefined. Regression involves data modeling.

It has been alleged that data mining has been used both in the United States and elsewhere to combat terrorism. As always in such cases, those who know don't say, and those who say don't know. One may surmise that these anti-terrorist applications look for unusual patterns. Many credit card holders have been contacted when their spending patterns changed substantially.

Data mining has become an important feature in many customer relationship management applications. For example, this technology enables companies to focus their marketing efforts on likely customers rather than trying to sell to everyone out there. Human resources applications help companies recruit and manage employees. We have already mentioned market basket analysis. Strategic enterprise management applications help a company transform corporate targets and goals into operational decisions such as hiring and factory scheduling.

Given its great power, many people are concerned with the human rights and privacy issues around data mining. Sophisticated applications could work its way around privacy safeguards. As the technology becomes more widespread and less expensive, these issues may become more urgent. As data is summarized the wrong conclusions can be drawn. This problem not only affects human rights but also the company's bottom line.

Understanding Data Mining

Well begun is half done. We can say that the invention of Internet is the greatest invention of the century which allows for quick information retrieval. It also has negative aspects, as it is an open forum therefore differentiating facts from fiction seems tough. It is the objective of every researcher to know how to perform mining of data on the Internet for accuracy of data. There are a number of search engines that provide powerful search results.

Knowing File Extensions in Data Mining

For mining data the first thing is important to know file extensions. Sites ending with dot-com are either commercial or sales sites. Since sales is involved there is a possibility that the collected information is inaccurate. Sites ending with dot-gov are of government departments, and these sites are reviewed by professionals. Sites ending with dot-org are generally for non-profit organizations. There is a possibility that the information is not accurate. Sites ending with dot-edu are of educational institutions, where the information is sourced by professionals. If you do not have an understanding you may take help of professional data mining services.

Knowing Search Engine Limitations for Data Mining

Second step is to understand when performing data mining is that majority search engines have filtering, file extension, or parameter. These are restrictions to be typed after your search term, for example: if you key in "marketing" and click "search," every site will be listed from dot-com sites having the term "marketing" on its website. If you key in "marketing site.gov," (without the quotation marks) only government department sites will be listed. If you key in "marketing site:.org" only non-profit organizations in marketing will be listed. However, if you key in "marketing site:.edu" only educational sites in marketing will be displayed. Depending on the kind of data that you want to mine after your search term you will have to enter "site.xxx", where xxx will being replaced by.com,.gov,.org or.edu.

Advanced Parameters in Data Mining

When performing data mining it is crucial to understand far beyond file extension that it is even possible to search particular terms, for example: if you are data mining for structural engineer's association of California and you key in "association of California" without quotation marks the search engine will display hundreds of sites having "association" and "California" in their search keywords. If you key in "association of California" with quotation marks, the search engine will display only sites having exactly the phrase "association of California" within the text. If you type in "association of California" site:.com, the search engine will display only sites having "association of California" in the text, from only business organizations.

If you find it difficult it is better to outsource data mining to companies like Online Web Research Services

Data Mining - Critical for Businesses to Tap the Unexplored Market

Knowledge discovery in databases (KDD) is an emerging field and is increasingly gaining importance in today's business. The knowledge discovery process, however, is vast, involving understanding of the business and its requirements, data selection, processing, mining and evaluation or interpretation; it does not have any pre-defined set of rules to go about solving a problem. Among the other stages, the data mining process holds high importance as the task involves identification of new patterns that have not been detected earlier from the dataset. This is relatively a broad concept involving web mining, text mining, online mining etc.

What Data Mining is and what it is not?

The data mining is the process of extracting information, which has been collected, analyzed and prepared, from the dataset and identifying new patterns from that information. At this juncture, it is also important to understand what it is not. The concept is often misunderstood for knowledge gathering, processing, analysis and interpretation/ inference derivation. While these processes are absolutely not data mining, they are very much necessary for its successful implementation.

The 'First-mover Advantage'

One of the major goals of the data mining process is to identify an unknown or rather unexplored segment that had always existed in the business or industry, but was overlooked. The process, when done meticulously using appropriate techniques, could even make way for niche segments providing companies the first-mover advantage. In any industry, the first-mover would bag the maximum benefits and exploit resources besides setting standards for other players to follow. The whole process is thus considered to be a worthy approach to identify unknown segments.

The online knowledge collection and research is the concept involving many complications and, therefore, outsourcing the data mining services often proves viable for large companies that cannot devote time for the task. Outsourcing the web mining services or text mining services would save an organization's productive time which would otherwise be spent in researching.

The data mining algorithms and challenges

Every data mining task follows certain algorithms using statistical methods, cluster analysis or decision tree techniques. However, there is no single universally accepted technique that can be adopted for all. Rather, the process completely depends on the nature of the business, industry and its requirements. Thus, appropriate methods have to be chosen depending upon the business operations.

The whole process is a subset of knowledge discovery process and as such involves different challenges. Analysis and preparation of dataset is very crucial as the well-researched material could assist in extracting only the relevant yet unidentified information useful for the business. Hence, the analysis of the gathered material and preparation of dataset, which also considers industrial standards during the process, would consume more time and labor. Investment is another major challenge in the process as it involves huge cost on deploying professionals with adequate domain knowledge plus knowledge on statistical and technological aspects.

The importance of maintaining a comprehensive database prompted the need for data mining which, in turn, paved way for niche concepts. Though the concept has been present for years now, companies faced with ever growing competition have realized its importance only in the recent years. Besides being relevant, the dataset from where the information is actually extracted also has to be sufficient enough so as to pull out and identify a new dimension. Yet, a standardized approach would result in better understanding and implementation of the newly identified patterns.

Data Mining

I just love the so called political correct terminology used today. How they decide it's really a political correct term is beyond me. Why don't they call it what it is; misleading terminology, whitewashing, sugar coating. Example: collaterial damage ie. innocent people fatally killed in the wake of combat.

Now the new term for collecting information on people to compile marketing lists so that we can all receive more junk mail, marketing phone calls and faxes is a cute little term called Data Mining.

This is a quote from a banking website on the subject:
Let me try to clarify this. We are wanting to contact our commercial customers' payors that do not bank with us. We would get the information off their checks when our commercial customers deposit them. For example, I use ABC Cleaners and pay by check but I bank at a different bank than the Cleaners. The Cleaner's bank would take my information off my check to contact me.

Data mining has been defined as "The nontrivial extraction of implicit, previously unknown, and potentially useful information from data" [1] and "The science of extracting useful information from large data sets or databases" [2]. Although it is usually used in relation to analysis of data, data mining, like artificial intelligence, is an umbrella term and is used with varied meaning in a wide range of contexts.

The Kirchman Corporation, a leading provider of automation software and compliance services to the banking industry, with over 800 financial institutions worldwide recently publised a 4 page gloss executive summary on Data Mining in the banking industry.

[The Kirchman Corporation became a Metavante subsidiary in May 2004 and operates within the Metavante Financial Services Group. Metavante is a subsidiary of Marshall & Ilsley Corporation (NYSE: MI) Kirchman Bankway®, the easiest-to-use and most customer-focused core bank software on the market, provides a comprehensive package of business solutions for use by the smallest de novo to the largest multi-billion-dollar bank holding company. Operating on IBM and Sun Microsystems hardware platforms, Kirchman Bankway® makes it easy for everyone from the teller to the CEO to access everything they need to know about their customers, right at their fingertips.[www.kirchman.com, Orlando. FL]

Data Mining software is used to analyse customer data and trends in banking as well as many other industries. Chase analyzed the attributes and habits of its checking account customers for clues that might reveal how to set the minimum balance requirement to retain profitable customers. The staff used data mining to develop profiles of customer groups whose members consistently had trouble maintaining minimum balances.

I'm sure you no where I'm headed with this. If Banks use Data Mining to predict trends in one area of services, it's not a far leap to say they would also use data mining to add courtesy bounce protection to customers who have a low balance and would be more likley to overdraft. Would it be too far of a leap to say banks might even use data mining in deciding what customers may get their account processed high to low?

Data Mining and Financial Data Analysis

Most marketers understand the value of collecting financial data, but also realize the challenges of leveraging this knowledge to create intelligent, proactive pathways back to the customer. Data mining - technologies and techniques for recognizing and tracking patterns within data - helps businesses sift through layers of seemingly unrelated data for meaningful relationships, where they can anticipate, rather than simply react to, customer needs as well as financial need. In this accessible introduction, we provides a business and technological overview of data mining and outlines how, along with sound business processes and complementary technologies, data mining can reinforce and redefine for financial analysis.

Objective:

1. The main objective of mining techniques is to discuss how customized data mining tools should be developed for financial data analysis.

2. Usage pattern, in terms of the purpose can be categories as per the need for financial analysis.

3. Develop a tool for financial analysis through data mining techniques.

Data mining:

Data mining is the procedure for extracting or mining knowledge for the large quantity of data or we can say data mining is "knowledge mining for data" or also we can say Knowledge Discovery in Database (KDD). Means data mining is : data collection , database creation, data management, data analysis and understanding.

There are some steps in the process of knowledge discovery in database, such as

1. Data cleaning. (To remove nose and inconsistent data)

2. Data integration. (Where multiple data source may be combined.)

3. Data selection. (Where data relevant to the analysis task are retrieved from the database.)

4. Data transformation. (Where data are transformed or consolidated into forms appropriate for mining by performing summary or aggregation operations, for instance)

5. Data mining. (An essential process where intelligent methods are applied in order to extract data patterns.)

6. Pattern evaluation. (To identify the truly interesting patterns representing knowledge based on some interesting measures.)

7. Knowledge presentation.(Where visualization and knowledge representation techniques are used to present the mined knowledge to the user.)

Data Warehouse:

A data warehouse is a repository of information collected from multiple sources, stored under a unified schema and which usually resides at a single site.

Text:

Most of the banks and financial institutions offer a wide verity of banking services such as checking, savings, business and individual customer transactions, credit and investment services like mutual funds etc. Some also offer insurance services and stock investment services.

There are different types of analysis available, but in this case we want to give one analysis known as "Evolution Analysis".

Data evolution analysis is used for the object whose behavior changes over time. Although this may include characterization, discrimination, association, classification, or clustering of time related data, means we can say this evolution analysis is done through the time series data analysis, sequence or periodicity pattern matching and similarity based data analysis.

Data collect from banking and financial sectors are often relatively complete, reliable and high quality, which gives the facility for analysis and data mining. Here we discuss few cases such as,

Eg, 1. Suppose we have stock market data of the last few years available. And we would like to invest in shares of best companies. A data mining study of stock exchange data may identify stock evolution regularities for overall stocks and for the stocks of particular companies. Such regularities may help predict future trends in stock market prices, contributing our decision making regarding stock investments.

Eg, 2. One may like to view the debt and revenue change by month, by region and by other factors along with minimum, maximum, total, average, and other statistical information. Data ware houses, give the facility for comparative analysis and outlier analysis all are play important roles in financial data analysis and mining.

Eg, 3. Loan payment prediction and customer credit analysis are critical to the business of the bank. There are many factors can strongly influence loan payment performance and customer credit rating. Data mining may help identify important factors and eliminate irrelevant one.

Factors related to the risk of loan payments like term of the loan, debt ratio, payment to income ratio, credit history and many more. The banks than decide whose profile shows relatively low risks according to the critical factor analysis.

We can perform the task faster and create a more sophisticated presentation with financial analysis software. These products condense complex data analyses into easy-to-understand graphic presentations. And there's a bonus: Such software can vault our practice to a more advanced business consulting level and help we attract new clients.

To help us find a program that best fits our needs-and our budget-we examined some of the leading packages that represent, by vendors' estimates, more than 90% of the market. Although all the packages are marketed as financial analysis software, they don't all perform every function needed for full-spectrum analyses. It should allow us to provide a unique service to clients.

The Products:

ACCPAC CFO (Comprehensive Financial Optimizer) is designed for small and medium-size enterprises and can help make business-planning decisions by modeling the impact of various options. This is accomplished by demonstrating the what-if outcomes of small changes. A roll forward feature prepares budgets or forecast reports in minutes. The program also generates a financial scorecard of key financial information and indicators.

Customized Financial Analysis by BizBench provides financial benchmarking to determine how a company compares to others in its industry by using the Risk Management Association (RMA) database. It also highlights key ratios that need improvement and year-to-year trend analysis. A unique function, Back Calculation, calculates the profit targets or the appropriate asset base to support existing sales and profitability. Its DuPont Model Analysis demonstrates how each ratio affects return on equity.

Financial Analysis CS reviews and compares a client's financial position with business peers or industry standards. It also can compare multiple locations of a single business to determine which are most profitable. Users who subscribe to the RMA option can integrate with Financial Analysis CS, which then lets them provide aggregated financial indicators of peers or industry standards, showing clients how their businesses compare.

iLumen regularly collects a client's financial information to provide ongoing analysis. It also provides benchmarking information, comparing the client's financial performance with industry peers. The system is Web-based and can monitor a client's performance on a monthly, quarterly and annual basis. Data Entry Or OCR - A Tough Information Concern

Optical character recognition or OCR has gained fame in the digital world as you can scan and view anything electronically or do the reverse action of having a document in digital format be converted to hard copies. Data entry, on the other hand, is another popular trend in the age of information but the process does not make a greater impact to other people as this is not new to the world computers. The question about which one is greater or highly functional or more reliable lies on how we handle information.

OCR can be used in many digital formats and file conversions. Data entry can be used in many ways and there are special circumstances wherein data operation can only solve a particular problem. So what are the pros and cons of using OCR in information management?

OCR is best used for file conversions of digital formats to readable and printable hard copies. The process involves scanning of different documents and you can choose which format should you convert your final output. Excel, Rich Text Formats, MS Word, Text, PDF and HTML are the most common formats that OCR software converts through a scanner. These converted documents are easily manageable, editable and affordable as compared to data entry.

However, there are some functions in document processing systems that OCR cannot deal with and sometimes its counterpart can do is just much more effective and faster to execute. At a glance OCR may seem to be a lot cheaper than data entry but if you will have to estimate a bulk OCR project cost in contrast to massive data entry project budget will all error corrections, you may realize that OCR system would cost you more.

Error correction process is definitely more accessible, affordable and convenient. Audio files and hard copy documents can be done easily by data encoders. There are some cases wherein data entry becomes the only solution to certain information problems. Medical transcriptions, for instance, cannot executed by any OCR and scanning work. Audio files need medical transcriptionists to manually encode data from audio file to text or hard copy. Data entry also proves its higher capability and reliability in cases such as data extractions and conversions of mailing list. There are several levels of data manipulation service that needs OCR intervention at the start but a higher percentage of data entry functions are needed in order to finish the data input process.

So if you are asking which one is of greater importance which one is of greater importance between OCR and data entry, the honest answer is that both of them are of equal significance. Functionalities and utility choices vary from each type of information you need to obtain for a more productive management or information for better results.

Is Web Scraping Relevant in Today's Business World?

Different techniques and processes have been created and developed over time to collect and analyze data. Web scraping is one of the processes that have hit the business market recently. It is a great process that offers businesses with vast amounts of data from different sources such as websites and databases.

It is good to clear the air and let people know that data scraping is legal process. The main reason is in this case is because the information or data is already available in the internet. It is important to know that it is not a process of stealing information but rather a process of collecting reliable information. Most people have regarded the technique as unsavory behavior. Their main basis of argument is that with time the process will be over flooded and therefore lead to parity in plagiarism.

We can therefore simply define web scraping as a process of collecting data from a wide variety of different websites and databases. The process can be achieved either manually or by the use of software. The rise of data mining companies has led to more use of the web extraction and web crawling process. Other main functions such companies are to process and analyze the data harvested. One of the important aspects about these companies is that they employ experts. The experts are aware of the viable keywords and also the kind of information which can create usable statistic and also the pages that are worth the effort. Therefore the role of data mining companies is not limited to mining of data but also help their clients be able to identify the various relationships and also build the models.

Some of the common methods of web scraping used include web crawling, text gripping, DOM parsing, and expression matching. The latter process can only be achieved through parsers, HTML pages or even semantic annotation. Therefore there are many different ways of scraping the data but most importantly they work towards the same goal. The main objective of using web scraping service is to retrieve and also compile data contained in databases and websites. This is a must process for a business to remain relevant in the business world.

The main questions asked about web scraping touch on relevance. Is the process relevant in the business world? The answer to this question is yes. The fact that it is employed by large companies in the world and has derived many rewards says it all. It is important to note that many people regarded this technology as a plagiarism tool and others consider it as a useful tool that harvests the data required for the business success.

Using of web scraping process to extract data from the internet for competition analysis is highly recommended. If this is the case, then you must be sure to spot any pattern or trend that can work in a given market.

Data Entry in Outsourcing Businesses

The process in, which a business house engages another company to do a particular type of work instead of using its own employees to do the same work, is called outsourcing. This is basically practiced so that the company can concentrate more on the core function. The cheap cost of outsourcing work is also another reason.

Outsourcing companies are often referred as "business to business" companies. Their business is dependent on the service provided by them to other business houses. Nowadays, every company is engaged in outsourcing. When a sole proprietor gives responsibility to another to buy supplies for the office, then automatically this process becomes outsourcing. In a real sense, it is almost impossible to do everything by yourself. You have to become dependent on those who are skilled in certain fields.

Data entry is one of the oldest and well known as the most common outsourcing activities that have been widely accepted across the globe for a long period of time. Still today, the demand is sky rocketing and the scope of data entry companies are just expanding.

All companies value their data very much. In order to generate good business, you need to deal with your data efficiently. Thus, companies related to BTB activities take care of the data handling very seriously. The employees are trained and prepared for all sorts of detailed oriented work. The services vary from back office support for a banking institute, calculation of medical bills, maintaining payroll functions etc. Banks generally outsource the work of the business class customers. Lock box payment is one of such example.

There are plenty of companies in the market of outsourcing who are engaged in providing in different kinds of services to the clients all across the globe. Many companies, which are earlier engaged into hard core data entry operations, are now exploring the area of medical billing, research work, project work for various universities, marketing job, news agencies, trade and several types of insurance organizations.

You can help your company to grow and reach a tremendous height once you get accustomed to take the advantages from various available data entry work. The service providers take an extra step to make sure that the work those are being delivered are of high quality and fulfill all the requirements as asked by the clients. Accuracy and punctually are the keywords to survive in the outsourcing market.
